GU16s from Issaquah take Top Honors After All-EYSA Presidents Cup Final

(May 18, 2015) Coaches Steve Salmon and Jim Neil and their Issaquah GU16 Select team (ISC Gunners Select 98) just won back-to-back State Cup championships by beating Mercer Island Force 1-0 in a very tight defensive battle in the Presidents Cup GU16 Division 2 final on Sunday, May 10, at Starfire. The two EYSA teams were deadlocked at the end of the first half, and continued until the Issaquah team managed a beautiful far-post goal at a ridiculously tight angle by breaking free down the right side in the 70th minute. Issaquah's stellar defense only allowed a single goal in the tournament, and the team dominated its opponents, outscoring them 16-1 in six straight matches.

"We will play again in the NPSL, thanks to Issaquah FC," said GU16 Select Team Coach Salmon, just off the GU16 Div 2 championship and thinking ahead to his team's next steps. The entire team has moved to Issaquah FC for the 2015-2016 season, their GU17 year.

Coach Neil added, "This has proven to be the most competitive league outside of RCL 1." The team will be able to continue on in the Washington Youth Soccer league by moving in its entirety from ISC to Issaquah FC, and remaining a part of the EYSA family. In fact, as Coach Neil points out, "In the 2015 State Cup, all four finalists in the WYSA Presidents Cup (GU16 Div 2) were from the NPSL Div 1: ISC, Kent United, Mercer Island and Crossfire. In league play, we beat each of these teams with the exception of Crossfire, where we lost 1-0, all of which we accomplished with a 12-person roster." Going into the 2015-2016 season, Coaches Salmon and Neil hopes to pick up five more quality players. (As we go to press, the team is still looking to fill out its roster for its U17 year.)

Coach Neil says of his team, "We are highly competitive, with a focus on the complete athlete, meaning we want our players to be balanced between the demands of soccer, academics, other sports and social service." Issaquah FC welcomes Coaches Salmon and Neil, and the amazing GU16 state champions to Issaquah FC, where we pledge to support their efforts to continue their State Cup championship streak into their U17 year.
